Kaya (Hello), my name is Joshua James, I am a proud Noongar Wardandi Bibulmun man from Noongar Boodja in Western Australia. Now living on the Surf Coast. I am an Aboriginal artist with my inspiration for creating traditional and contemporary designs originating from being able to share my culture and storytelling through my designs. Sharing my culture with everyone is my passion.

Ruth Blackhirst

Based in Lorne, Ruth Blackhirst is a multidisciplinary artist whose work is deeply informed by the natural beauty of the Surf Coast and the ocean. Ruth’s practice is defined by a dedication to the environment and an enthusiasm for repurposing discarded items into extraordinary wearable sculptures and homewares.
Using diamond-cutting, drilling, and kiln-slumping techniques, she transforms recycled glass bottles into unique pieces that capture a water-like appearance. Beyond her signature glasswork, Ruth’s creative exploration extends to sea-glass and porcelain, blending a sustainable heart with refined craftsmanship to create one-of-a-kind art.

Bethany Dangerfield

Bethany Dangerfield is a creative at heart and explores her passion for painting in between her career as a secondary educator and raising her two children. Living between the beach and the bush provides endless inspiration for Bethany as well as her passion for travel, interiors and the beauty found in everyday life. She predominantly works with acrylic on canvas, moving between semi abstract landscapes, botanicals and still life subjects. Drawn to vibrant and playful colours, Bethany’s work seeks to bring joy to any space

Demonstration of traditional Aboriginal artwork design

Please join Joshua for a demonstration on how Noongar Wardandi Aboriginal People create traditional art in a contemporary setting. Demonstration runs for 30 minutes.

Paint Porcelain

Join Ruth in Lorne for a relaxed, hands-on porcelain painting session as part of the Surf Coast Arts Trail. Choose from a range of pre-made bisque pieces - earrings, pendants or decorations - and paint them your way using a variety of techniques. Ruth's work is inspired by the coast, but this is your time to explore your own style, whether that's fine detail, bold pattern or something in between. Each participant leaves with four pieces and once fired, will be ready to wear or gift.
Completely beginner-friendly and free to attend - just bring your creativity.
