Kaya (Hello), my name is Joshua James, I am a proud Noongar Wardandi man from Noongar Wardandi Gnalla Karla Boodja in the Southwest of Western Australia. I grew up and lived on Noongar Country until I was 23 years of age learning the ways of my people, my culture and our connection to the land and sea as salt-water people of Noongar Boodja. I have lived and worked in remote Aboriginal communities across the Norther Territory and Western Australia including, Larrakia, Tiwi Islands and Nhulunbuy in East Arnhem Country. I now live in Winchelsea on Gulidjan Country in the South-West of Victoria with my wife and two children. I am committed to teaching my two children the ways of our people and ensuring that culture grows strong within themselves, as they are Moorditj Noongar children. Moorditj Kaadadjan – Strong Knowledge.
My inspiration for creating traditional and contemporary designs is Moorditj because I can share my culture, our Aboriginal voice, truth telling and storytelling through my designs. In 2021 I started to focus on my craft of design, for people to share my artwork in their homes and workplaces, which in turn starts people talking about the Aboriginal culture and the story behind the design. My love in traditional design excelled in 2022 and my passion for sharing our culture has grown with every individual piece I create.”
