The Torquay and District Historical Society (TDHS) operated informally before 2000. It was incorporated in 2000 with a total of 22 members. Meetings were held in a hired room at Spring Creek Community House and also at 2 Charles Lane, the home of then President Spencer Leighton. After the Surf Coast Shire purchased the old Torquay Police Station (TOPS) this building became available in 2011 to locate the Society and its archives and collections. History House, as it is known, is used for meetings of the Society, exhibitions and is regularly open to visitors.
